I know I wouldn’t be able to row my own but meh? I’d be moving from a mk6 Golf R. It’s either this or I find some cash to tune the R cuz omg slow.

Also, jet lag sucks. I'm up waaaay to early.

Is it really that slow? I thought the Rs had like ~250HP and AWD.

Is the R slow, or is it the perception of slow? And cheating? Maybe your car is cheating on you.

Wait, it’s a VW. It’s slow...

I don’t think I could buy a non-wagon Volvo.

It’s slow. But a flash is $600 from APR... too much

I know but they don’t make fast ones anymore

So you won’t spend $600 to make your current car more enjoyable, but will spend $28k on a different car? Seems rather silly to me.

Yes, 256hp/243tq but it’s front wheel drive until they slip then it sends to the rear. I was spoiled by my WRX before this. A tune and a downpipe will get that number over 300 each but it’s at least $1000+ to get there

They’re not investments to me and I don’t keep cars too long. I put too many miles on and have too much wear on the inside to lease.

And it’s not just power, the car has no character.

Fair enough. I’m in the same boat. Since October 2010 I’ve had 4 new cars because I just get bored. Leasing would be perfect for me, but again I rack up the miles far too quickly.

I’m surprised the Golf R has no character. That’s the first time I’ve heard that.

My Wife has an ‘08 GTI and even that thing has character. Maybe the new R is better, so I’ve read but the GTI’s are just right behind them in terms of power and so much cheaper.

If Subaru came out with a true wagon or even another hatch I’d get a WRX or STI (if it has a new engine...)

$1k for ~+50HP??? I guess I know why I don’t see too many tuned Rs around...

I agree with no character. I test drove both a new GTI and R when I was shopping for a new car, walked away supremely bored by both.

Yup. I mean they don’t make many anyways but tuning get expensive on the German cars

Why? 50 hp for a grand seems like a bargain to me but I’m used to working on older stuff. Has tuning cars gotten orders of magnitude cheaper?

It seems strange to me that you’d say “wow my Golf R is slow and soulless. I know, I’ll get a Volvo!”

From what I’ve read the Volvo R’s have more character and it comes with 325hp/354tq which is much more than the Golf. Dunno, need to test drive it

I know that Golfs are not small cars anymore but as far as weight goes Volvo usually competes with F150's. I’ve driven light and fast, and I’ve driven heavy cars making double the hp that felt slow.

FWIW APR offers a stage 1 tune with no DP needed that puts you over 300. It’s only 599.

The S60 T6R has a similar Haldex awd system as your Golf R so if you’re looking to get away from Haldex then you won’t accomplish anything by getting another Haldex car.

But, Haldex being “fwd until the wheels slip” is not entirely accurate. At least not any more. That was the case with the old Gen 1 & 2 Haldex systems. But starting with Gen 3 it gained the ability to proactively send power to the rear wheels based on things like yaw rate and throttle position. Both your Mk6 Golf R and the S60 T6R have Haldex Gen 4. The Polestar has a recalibrated Haldex system that’s supposedly more rear-biased.

That said, Haldex is essentially an electronically-controlled clutch that engages at a varying rate depending on the computer, and not a full-on center differential.

Getting away from the Haldex is not the priority but would be nice. I know it’s not just slippage but most people stop listening once you start describing it.

The Volvo looks cool and all, but I think you’d be let down after coming out of the R. Especially with Volvo’s old auto. My parents had a few Volvos with that transmission, and it’s a bad one. If you want a sporty Volvo, there isn’t much between the C30/S40 T5s and the real Polestars, in my opinion.

What a coincidence. I saw this very car yesterday in person when I was pulling out of the Costco next to this CarMax. I pointed it out to him and we both agreed that Rebel Blue works on the S60. My dad and I ended up talking about Volvos for the rest of the trip home. Rebel Blue sure looks beautiful.
